Papers of Homer L. Calkin, 1897-1996.

The papers of Homer L. Calkin do more than document his career as an historian and archivist with the United States State Department, they also record his writing career and his work with the Methodist Church. The first series consists of five boxes relating to Calkin's education, career, and personal life. This section contains everything from his school diplomas to reminiscences about his service during World War II and from State Department employee bulletins and memos to University of Iowa alumni functions and gifts. There are also extensive correspondence files dating from 1929-1989 and diaries that he kept continuously from 1950-1993. The next series is devoted to his work for the Methodist Church, from the local to the international levels. He was active in everything from jurisdictional meetings to the World Methodist Historical Society. He also served on the Commission on Archives and History and attended numerous Methodist Church conferences, meetings, and fellowships throughout the country. There are seven boxes in series three containing documents relating to Homer Calkin's writing career. Two of his works (Castings from the Foundry Mold and Women in American Foreign Affairs) are represented in great detail, from research notes through chapter drafts to page proofs. Many of his articles are filed in this series, as are several literary projects that were never completed. The memorabilia ranges from a pencil box from grammar school, to military items, to Methodist Church badges, to souvenirs. The final section consists of oversized photographs, certificates, and a scrapbook.
